Function
- ran protein guanine nucleotide exchange factor; promotes the exchange of Ran-bound GDP by GTP
- RCC1/Ran complex (together with other proteins) acts as a component of a signaling pathway that detects unreplicated DNA
- role in regulation of chromosome condendation in S phase
- required for initiation of DNA synthesis & for progression through the cell cycle
- role in nucleocytoplasmic & intranuclear transport of ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles
- GTP hydrolysis of TC4-GTP promotes deposition of RNP's at targeted sites such as nuclear pore complexes or nucleoli

- patients with Raynaud's syndrome produce antibodies that recognize p46RCC1
Comparative biology
- the pim1 gene in Saccharomyces pombe is a homolog of RCC1; the product of the yeast gene is a serine/threonine kinase implicated in coupling S -> M phase transition in the cell cycle
- there is also a mammalian pim-1 gene which encodes a cytoplasmic serine/threonine kinase
