Indications
Specimen
- transport in anaerobic transport vial or swabs in anaerobic transport tubes
- do NOT refrigerate
- blood, body fluids, pus, surgical tissue
Notes
Gram stain should also be performed.
Sites that contain anaerobes as normal flora are NOT suitable:
Swabs are inferior to aspirates.
Anaerobic cultures of swab specimen
- limited to screening procedure
- reported only by gram stain morphology
Clues to presence of anaerobic infection:
- putrid-smelling discharge
- infections adjacent to a mucosal surface
- presence of gas in tissues
- infection in necrotic avascular tissue
- gram-stain showing mixed, pleomorphic bacterial flora
- negative cultures for aerobes with positive gram stain
- infection following the use of aminoglycosides
- septic thrombophlebitis
- septic abortion
- post-gastrointestinal surgery
