Function
- cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase with a dual-specificity for the second messengers cAMP & cGMP
nucleoside 3',5'-cyclic phosphate + H2O = nucleoside 5'-phosphate
- binds 2 divalent metal cations per subunit
- site 1 may preferentially bind Zn+2
- site 2 has a preference for Mg+2 &/or Mn+2 (putative)
Structure
- homodimer (putative)
- contains 2 GAF domains
- GAF 1 functions as a dimerization domain
- GAF 2 binds cGMP, which activates the enzyme (putative)
- belongs to the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase family, PDE2 subfamily
Compartment
- peripheral membrane
Alternative splicing
Expression
- expressed in brain > heart, placenta, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney & pancreas
