Structure
- belongs to the small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) family, class I subfamily
- contains 12 LRR repeats (leucine-rich repeats_
- no Ser/Gly dipeptide sequence expected for attachment of O-linked glycosaminoglycans, thus probably not a proteoglycan
- O-linked polysaccharide on 54-Ser is probably mucin type linked to GalNAc
- N-linked glycan at Asn-281 consists of variable structures of GlcNAc, mannose, fucose, HexNAc & hexose
Compartment
Expression
- expressed in aorta, uterus > small intestine, heart, liver, bladder, ovary, stomach, adrenal, thyroid, mammary glands > trachea, bone marrow, lung
Pathology
- high expression in osteoarthritic articular cartilage
Polymorphism
- poly-Asp region of ASPN is polymorphic, ranges at least from 11-17 Asp
