Function
- role during spermatogenesis through repression of transposable elements & inhibition of their mobilization
- acts via the piRNA
- mediates repression of transposable elements during meiosis by forming complexes composed of piRNAs & Piwi proteins
- regulates methylation & subsequent repression of transposons
- required for localization of Piwi proteins to the meiotic nuage
- ensures entry of correct transcripts into the normal piRNA pool
- found in a mRNP complex, at least composed of TDRD1, TDRD6, TDRD7 & DDX4
- interacts with MAEL
- interacts with PIWIL1, PIWIL2 & PIWIL4 (when methylated on Arg)
Structure
- belongs to the TDRD1 family
- contains 1 MYND-type Zn+2 finger
- contains 4 Tudor domains
Compartment
- cytoplasm (putative)
- component of the meiotic nuage (P granule)
- also present in chromatoid body (putative)
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=4
Expression
Pathology
- expressed in several cancers
