Function

• may be the ligand for GPR39
• may have an appetite-reducing effect resulting in decreased food intake
• may reduce gastric emptying activity & jejunal motility
• effects are not synergistic with ghrelin

Structure

• amidation of Leu-98 is essential for obestatin activity

Expression

• derived from same precursor, appetite regulating hormone, as ghrelin
• effects are probably synergistic with GHRH
