Function
- 2 neuropeptides, neuropeptide W-23 & neuropeptide W-30 derived from a common precursor
- role in regulation of neuroendocrine signaling in the anterior pituitary gland
- stimulates water & food intake
- may play a role in hypothalamic response to stress
- activates GPR7 & GPR8
Structure
- two peptides of 23 & 30 amino acids, NPW23 & NPW30; NPW23 activates GPR7 & GPR8 more efficiently than NPW30
Compartment
Expression
- high levels
- substantia nigra, fetal kidney, trachea
- lower levels
- not detectable in many regions of the CNS
Pathology
- detected at high levels in lymphoblastic leukemia & colorectal adenocarcinoma
