Function
- Ca+2-dependent phospholipase A2
- selectively hydrolyzes glycerophospholipids in the sn-2 position
- not arachidonic acid-specific but has linoleic acid-specific activity
- stimulated by cytosolic Ca+2
phosphatidylcholine + H2O <--> 1-acylglycerophosphocholine + a carboxylate
Structure
- contains 1 N-terminal C2 domain
- associates with lipid membranes
- mediates its regulation by presenting active site to its substrate in response to elevations of cytosolic Ca+2
- contains 1 PLA2c domain
Compartment
- cytoplasm
- translocates to membrane vesicles (Ca+- dependent)
- translocates to perinuclear regions upon ionomycin stimulation
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed in stratified squamous epithelia, including: skin & cervix, but not in other tissues
- not detected in epidermis of normal skin
Pathology
- may play a role in inflammation in psoriatic lesions
- strongly expressed in the upper spinous layer of psoriatic epidermis
- weakly & discontinuously in atopic dermatitis & mycosis fungoides
