Function
- transcriptional regulator
- may play a role at early stages of development of specific neural lineages in most regions of the CNS, & of several lineages in the peripheral nervous system
- essential for generation of olfactory & autonomic neurons
- role in the initiation of neuronal differentiation
- mediates transcriptional activation by binding to the E box (5'-CANNTG-3')
- efficient DNA binding requires dimerization with another bHLH protein
- forms a heterodimer with TCF3
Inhibition:
- may be inhibited by HES1
Structure
- contains 1 basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domain
Compartment
nucleus (probable)
Expression
- expressed in the nervous system
- expressed in normal fetal pulmonary neuroendocrine cells, & lung cancers with neuroendocrine features
