Function

• transcriptional regulator
• may play a role at early stages of development of specific neural lineages in most regions of the CNS, & of several lineages in the peripheral nervous system
• essential for generation of olfactory & autonomic neurons
• role in the initiation of neuronal differentiation
• mediates transcriptional activation by binding to the E box (5'-CANNTG-3')
• efficient DNA binding requires dimerization with another bHLH protein
• forms a heterodimer with TCF3

Inhibition:

• may be inhibited by HES1
