Function
- acute phase protein
- may be involved in formation of collagen-associated fibers
- transport protein in plasma
- binds various ligands in the interior of its beta-barrel domain
- also binds synthetic drugs & influences their distribution & availability in the body
- appears to function in modulating activity of the immune system during the acute-phase reaction
Structure
- N-glycosylated. N-glycan heterogeneity at Asn-33: hex5hexNAc4 (minor), hex6hexNAc5 (major) & dhex1hex6hexNAc5 (minor)
- contains a beta-barrel that binds various ligands in its interior
- belongs to the calycin superfamily, lipocalin family
Compartment
Expression
- expressed by the liver & secreted into plasma
- expression is controlled by glucocorticoids, IL-1 & IL-6
- increases 5-50 fold with inflammation
Polymorphism
- 3 common alleles of ORM1 are known
