Function
- catalyzes terminal & only committed step in triacylglycerol synthesis by using diacylglycerol & fatty acyl CoA as substrates
- in contrast to DGAT2 it is not essential for survival
- may be involved in VLDL assembly
- lipid metabolism; glycerolipid metabolism
acyl-CoA + 1,2-diacylglycerol = CoA + triacylglycerol
Structure
- belongs to the membrane-bound acyltransferase family sterol o-acyltransferase subfamily
Compartment
- endoplasmic reticulum membrane; multi-pass membrane protein (putative)
Comparative biology
- inhibitors of DGAT1 enhance beta peptide & amyloid plaque removal in a mouse model for Alzheimer's disease
