Function
- poorly expressed deaminase
- ineffective at inhibiting retroviral replication
- DNA deaminase (cytidine deaminase) activity but is not able to mediate G-to-A hypermutation in newly synthesized retroviral DNA
Structure
- belongs to cytidine & deoxycytidylate deaminase family
Expression
- unstable protein, may be degraded by the proteasome
- expressed in testis, ovary, fetal liver & skin
Evolution
- APOBEC3H from old world monkeys has retained its antiviral activity, while it is lost in other primates
- 1 of 7 related genes or pseudogenes found in a cluster, thought to result from gene duplication, on chromosome 22
