endarterectomy

Indications

• atherosclerosis with arterial stenosis
  • peripheral arterial disease (peripheral vascular disease)
  • removal atheromatous plaque in the endothelial lining of any artery
  • removal of arterial thrombosis that may complicate an atheroma

Procedure

• the procedure separates the an atheromatous plaque from the endothelial arterial wall & removes it

Complications

• embolism of plaque

Notes

• 1st performed on a superficial femoral artery in 1946
