balanitis

Introduction

Inflammation/infection of the glans penis.

Etiology

• generally related to poor hygiene in uncircumcized men
• Candida
• associated disorders:
  • Reiter's syndrome
  • reactive arthritis
  • lichen sclerosus et atrophicus
  • erythema multiforme
• harsh soaps or prolonged contact with soap after bathing
• uncontrolled diabetes
  • dapagliflozin & presumably other flozins related to glucosuria

Clinical manifestations

• circinate balanitis: shallow, moist, serpinginous ulcers with raised borders
• may be painful
• may be foul-smelling

Laboratory

• urinalysis may show pyuria

Management

• hygiene
• topical antibiotics
  • clotrimazole for candidiasis
• circumcision
