Introduction

Air contrast barium enema (ACBE).

Indications

detection of colorectal carcinoma
evaluation of extent of inflammatory bowel disease
evaluation of other colonic disease
- diverticulosis
- intussesception
- CMV colitis
- Hirschsprung's disease
- intestinal obstruction

Preparation

GoLytely the evening prior to procedure (4 liters).
reglan 10 mg PO may be added

Procedure

x-rays of the abdomen are taken while the colon is filled with barium through the rectum
