Complications
Life threatening complications:
- glomerulonephritis
- central nervous system disease
- seizures
- psychosis associated with
- increased generalized SLE disease activity
- high antiphospholipid antibody titers
- organic brain syndrome
- hematologic disease
- infectious complications of treatment
- pulmonary
- myocarditis
- vasculitis of the gastrointestinal tract
Other complications
- avascular osteonecrosis
- accelerated coronary artery disease[4]

- hyperlipidemia
- higher prevalence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia[3]
- leukocytoclastic vasculitis (image)[5]
Management
- Life-threatening complications
- prednisone 1 mg/kg/day for non-infectious complications
- the combination of cyclophosphamide plus prednisone is superior to prednisone alone in preventing renal failure
- psychosis treated with
- glucocorticoids alone or in combination with immunosuppressive agent[2]
- antiplatelet &/or anticoagulation therapy if high high antiphospholipid antibody titers[2]
