• contiguous infection
  • vertebrae
  • kidneys
  • complication of intra-abdominal infection
  • retroperitoneal colon (inflammatory bowel disease)
• hematogenous spread

Clinical manifestations

• may be signs of systemic infection
• manifestations related to primary site of infection
• flank pain
• referred pain to the groin or the thigh
• paresthesia of thigh
• limitation of hip extension

Radiology

• computed tomography (CT)

Management

• surgical drainage
