retroperitoneum (peri/pararenal fat)

Introduction

External & posterior to the peritoneum. The space between the parietal peritoneum & the muscles & bones of the lower back.

perirenal fat:

  • derived from extraperitoneal fat
  • continuous at the renal hilum

pararenal fat:

  • external to renal fascia
  • most obvious posterior to the kidney
