Etiology
- anemia of chronic disease
- infectious agents
- Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC)
- lymphoma involving the bone marrow
- granulomatous infections, especially fungal
- parvovirus B19
- drug-induced anemia
- zidovudine causes direct marrow toxicity
Laboratory
- serum erythropoietin levels < 50 U/mL (2/3)
- also see anemia
Management
- recombinant erythropoietin for those patients with serum erythropoietin levels < 50 U/mL
- intravenous immune globulin for parvovirus B19 infection
