Introduction
Study characteristics: 1205 patients mean age 61 years 76% men, 17% with diabetes mellitus
coronary stent vs coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
Results:
- similiar 1 & 3 year rates of death, stroke, & myocardial infarction
- higher rate of repeat revascularization in stent group at both 1 & 3 years (20% vs 6%)
- less angina in CABG group
- diabetic patients required more revascularization procedures than non-diabetic patients
- cost advantage of stenting diminished by higher rate of revascularization procedures
