Etiology
- severe aortic regurgitation
Pathology
- murmur of relative mitral stenosis
- the murmur occurs due to narrowing of the mitral orifice by the pressure of regurgitant flow on the anterior mitral leaflet
Clinical manifestations
- low-pitched rumbling diastolic murmur best heard at the cardiac apex
Differential diagnosis
- mitral stenosis
- Austin-Flint murmur distinguishable from mitral stenosis by the absence of a loud first heart sound (S1) & absence of an opening snap
