Etiology
- renal artery stenosis
- fibromuscular dysplasia
- atherosclerosis often associated with cigarette smoking
- renal vein thrombosis
Epidemiology
- women (fibromuscular dysplasia)
Clinical manifestations
- onset at an early age
- acute pulmonary edema
- bruits in flank region
- advanced retinopathy
Laboratory
- serum creatinine increased (bilateral renal artery stenosis)
- further increased after treatment with ACE inhibitor or ARB
