Introduction
Surgical incision of the vulva.
Indications
- prevention of laceration at the time of delivery
- facilitation of delivery
Contraindications
- no benefit to routine episitomy[3]
Procedure
- mediolateral episiotomy is generally preferred over midline episiotomy[4]
Complications
- increases risk for infection
- increases risk of hemorrhage[2]
