ischial tuberosity

Structure

• A rough bony projection at the junction of the lower end of the body of the ischium & its ramus.
• A weight-bearing point in the sitting position
• Provides attachment for the sacrotuberous ligament
• Site of origin of the hamstring muscles
• Gluteus maximus forms a pad over this tuberosity

Pathology

• pain & tenderness over the ischial tuberosity
  • may result from chronic pressure on the ischiogluteal bursa
  • associated with ischiogluteal bursitis
  • provoked by prolonged sitting on a firm surface
