• ilium behind posterior gluteal line
• posterior surface of sacrum & coccyx
• sacrotuberous ligament

Insertion

• iliotibial band of fascia lata & gluteal ridge of femur

Action

• extends thigh, especially from flexed position, as in climbing stairs or rising from a sitting position

Innervation

inferior gluteal nerve
