Introduction

Diet based on caloric density.

# of calories / weight of food in grams

Premise(s) of volumetrics:

  • people generally eat of constant volume of weight of food over a day
  • Reduce the concentration of calories in the food portions (energy density) but retain the volume
  • Select foods which are high in water, but low in fat (fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups)

Energy density food categories:

  • very low (< 0.6) fruits, vegetable, broth-based soups
  • low (0.6-1.5) cereals, cottage cheese, lean ham, potatoes
  • medium (1.5-4.0) bagels, bread products, eggs
  • high (>4.0) candy bars, cookies, salty snacks, nuts, oils

Studies testing dietary volumetrics for weight loss have not been published.
