Introduction
Diet based on caloric density.
# of calories / weight of food in grams
Premise(s) of volumetrics:
- people generally eat of constant volume of weight of food over a day
- Reduce the concentration of calories in the food portions (energy density) but retain the volume
- Select foods which are high in water, but low in fat (fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups)
Energy density food categories:
- very low (< 0.6) fruits, vegetable, broth-based soups
- low (0.6-1.5) cereals, cottage cheese, lean ham, potatoes
- medium (1.5-4.0) bagels, bread products, eggs
- high (>4.0) candy bars, cookies, salty snacks, nuts, oils
Studies testing dietary volumetrics for weight loss have not been published.
