Introduction
5-armed multicenter NIH-funded study ,
1583 patients > 40 years of age, 64% female
all patients with knee pain > 6 months duration & radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis ,
Glucosamine 500 mg TID
Chondroitin sulfate 400 mg TID
Glucosamine plus Chondroitin sulfate
Placebo ,
Acetaminophen, up to 4 g/day, for additional pain relief ,
Patients evaluated at baseline, 4,8,16 & 24 weeks
Primary outcome measure: 20% improvement from baseline (WOMAC pain severity scale) ,
Results:
- Celebrex better than placebo
- Glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, or combination no better than placebo for mild pain
- Combination of glucosamine + chondroitin sulfate better than placebo for moderate-severe pain
