Introduction
An osteophyte that forms on the bottom or back of the calcaneus.
Etiology
- may be associated with plantar fasciitis
Pathology
- calcification of the attachment of the plantar fascia, generally at the medial plantar tuberosity of the calcaneus
- Ca+2 deposits as osteophyte when fascia breaks away from the calcaneus
- the spiur projects anteriorly
- consequence of chronic repetitive trauma or stress
- when calcification of ligament(s) occurs, inflammation & pain result
Clinical manifestations
- often asymptomatic
- may be painful
Laboratory
no testing indicated
Radiology
X-ray will confirm osteophyte
Management
- treat associated plantar fasciitis
- reduce trauma to heel
- heel insert
- shoes with shock-absorbing soles
- weight reduction
- referral to podiatrist
- surgery rarely indicated
