Introduction

Study characteristics: 1094 African Americans with reduced creatinine clearance & hypertension

Groups:

• 2 blood pressure* goals:
  • 102-107 mm Hg
  • 92 mm Hg

* mean arterial pressure

3 antihypertensive agents

• metoprolol, ramipril, or amlodipine

Results:

• risk of developing diabetes significantly lower with ramipril than with metoprolol or amolodipine (RR=0.53)
• group with lower blood pressure goal more likely to develop diabetes
