electronic prescribing (eRx)
Introduction
Electronic transmission of prescription or prescribing information between a prescriber, dispenser, pharmacy benefit manager, or health plan.
The Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) of 2003 mandates that drug plans participating in the Medicare Part D prescription drug program must support the standards of electronic-prescribing set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by 2009. SureScripts routes prescribing information to the pharmacy.
Adherence to a set of standards was required by January 2006. Participation of prescribers and pharmacists is voluntary. Electronic-prescribing is not yet legal in Canada.
Electronic-prescribing can be done via personal computer or a handheld device (PDA or cellphone)loaded with electronic- prescribing software connected to the internet
Electronic-prescribing of controlled substances effective June 1, 2010
