Dosage

• 1 packet reconstituted with 75 mL of water 4 times/day
• 1-2 tabs PO TID/QID

1 tab = 1 packet: 250 mg of phosphorous

Contains equimolar amounts of Na+ & K+ phosphates

Pharmacokinetics

elimination in urine

Adverse effects

• mild laxative effect
• headache
• dizziness
• confusion

Drug interactions

• antacids: products containing aluminum, magnesium or calcium may bind phosphate & prevent absorption
• calcium/vitamin D: the effects of phosphate may be antagonized in the treatment of hypocalcemia
• K+ containing products: increased risk of hyperkalemia
• K+ sparing diuretics: increased risk of hyperkalemia
