periorbital cellulitis; preseptal cellulitis

Pathology

• infection of the skin surrounding the eye
  • including anterior skin of the eyelids
  • no involvement of the underlying fat tissue plane or extraocular muscles
  • rarely associated with severe complications Differential diagnsosis:
• orbital cellulitis
  • periorbital cellulitis lacks pain with eye movement, ophthalmoplegia, proptosis, & visual impairment
    • periorbital cellulitis lacks involvement of extraocular muscles & orbital fat
