Comparative biology
- sratching activates an immune response in mice that protects against skin infection
- when mice scratched itchy patches on their ears, the tissue swelled, & pain-sensing neurons released neuropeptides that stimulated mast cells
- mice prevented from scratching with a 'cone of shame' had less swollen ears with with fewer leukocytes
- scratching diminished Staphylococcus aureus on their ears[1]
