sialadenosis (sialosis)

Etiology

• unknown
• may be due to inappropriate autonomic nervous system stimulation
• may be associated with endocrine disorders (diabetes mellitus)
• may be associated with nutritional disorders (pellagra, bulimia)
• may be associated with medications (thioridazine, isoprenaline)

Epidemiology

• commonly presents in persons 20-60 years of age
• equal prevalence between males & females

Pathology

• noninflammatory disorder
• parotid acinar enlargement with hyperdense cytoplasmic granules

Clinical manifestations

• bilateral parotid gland enlargement
  • soft, non-tender, bilaterally enlarged parotid glands

• tissue biopsy
