- an organism has limited of resources
- greater investment in growth & reproduction vs investment in DNA repair maintenance results in increased cellular damage, shortened telomeres, accumulation of mutations, compromised stem cells, & senescence*
- damage accumulates in the soma because the body cannot repair all of it
* evolution is driven by survival of species
- faster growth & reproduction is an effective strategy
