von Willebrand factor (vWF) multimers in plasma

Indications

• evaluation of von Willebrand disease
• evaluation of mucocutaneous bleeding in patients with aortic valvular stenosis or other form of turbulend blood flow

Clinical significance

• deficiency or absence associated with von Willebrand disease types 2A & 2B
• disruption of HMW vWF multimers due to turbulent blood flow (i.e aortic valvular stenosis) may result in secondary von Willebrand disease (Heyde's syndrome)
