Libman-Sacks endocarditis

Etiology

• systemic lupus erythematosus
  • antiphospholipid antibody syndrome

Epidemiology

• 11% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Pathology

• non-infectious thrombotic endocarditis
• large verrucous lesions near the edge of the mitral valve (most common)
• lesions consist of immune complexes. mononuclear cells, & fibrin & platelet thrombi

Clinical manifestations

• generally asymptomatic

Complications

• transient ischemic attack or embolic stroke
• infectious endocarditis
