active urine sediment

Etiology

• nephritic syndrome (glomerulonephritis)

Laboratory

• urine microscopy
  • may contain granular casts, dysmorphic erythrocytes, & erythrocyte casts
  • coarse granular casts or muddy brown casts or renal tubular epithelial cells or renal tubular epithelial casts may be seen in patients with acute tubular necrosis
