potassium iodide (KI, Thyro-Block, Irostat)
Jump to navigation
Jump to search
Indications
- source of essential nutrient iodide
- blocks uptake of radioactive iodine[6]
Contraindications
Dosage
Pharmacokinetics
Mechanism of action
- iodide limits its own transport & inhibits synthesis of iodotyrosine & iodothyronine (Wolf-Chaikoff effect, 1948) due to increased intracellular iodide[5]
- blocks accumulation of radioactive iodine by the thyroid[6]
Notes
- relative amounts of iodine & iodide in Thyro-Block & Irostat are not known; however, the principle of its effects are probably similar to Lugol's solution.
