amlodipine/celecoxib (Consensi)

Introduction

amlodipine besylate + celecoxib (Consensi)

Indications

• osteoarthritis pain & hypertension

Contraindications

• patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery

Dosage

• 2.5, 5, or 10 mg of amlodipine + 200 mg of celcoxib

Adverse effects

• boxed warning for:
  • potentially fatal cardiovascular events
    • CV events can occur early & risk may increase over time
  • gastrointestinal bleeding
  • gastrointestinal ulceration
  • intestinal perforation, gastric perforation
  • risk for serious GI events is higher among elderly

Mechanism of action

• celecoxib alonge does not reduce blood pressure appears to act synergistically with amlodipine to lower blood pressure
