pyloromyotomy (Ramstedt's operation)

Indications

• hypertrophic pyloric stenosis

Procedure

• an incision is made in the smooth muscle wall of the pylorus
• hypertrophied muscle is cut until the mucosa bulges out
• the lining of the pylorus bulges through the incision opening a channel from the stomach to the duodenum
• if the mucosa is injured, it is sutured horizontally using interrupted vicryl or silk sutures
