Indications

• plasma volume expansion to treat serious blood volume loss following surgery (FDA approved 12/07) {all age groups}

Contraindications

(relative)

• abnormal sensitivity to the synthetic starch used in the product
• fluid overload
• kidney failure not related to hypovolemia -dialysis
• severe hypernatremia, or hyperchloremia
• intracranial hemorrhage

Adverse effects

• nausea
• itching

Mechanism of action

• isotonic saline solution containing a synthetic starch (6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 in 0.9% sodium chloride)
