Introduction
Interactions:
- current smokers with a 37% increased risk for type 2 diabetes, relative to nonsmokers
- former smokers with a 14% increased risk, relative to never smokers
- secondhand smoke aong never smokers with a 22% increased risk for type 2 diabetes risk relative to unexposed persons
- smoking cessation associated with a 54% increased risk for type 2 diabetes in the first 5 years relative to never smokers
- at 10 years, increased risk is only 11%
- 11.7% of type 2 diabetes among men & 2.4% among women can be attributed to active smoking[1]
