Indications

• evaluation of hypogonadism

Reference interval

• male: 0.5-2.0 ug/24 hours
• female: 0.2-1.5 ug/24 hours

Clinical significance

• weak androgen derived primarily from metabolism of epitestosterone
• produced in an inverse relationship with androsterone, a potent androgen
• excreted into the urine as conjugated & unconjugated derivatives
• elevated levels occur in patients with elevated androgen precursors but low androgen levels
• males with hypogonadism often have elevated levels of epiandrostrone
