Introduction
Many 'accepted guidelines' are not evidence-based.
- only 68% of cardiovascular recommendations in major guidelines are from randomized controlled trials, & only 45% of these fit 'high-quality' criteria.[1]
- only 14% of guidelines published by the Infectious Disease Society of America are based on randomized controlled trials[2]
- guidelines especially valuable when clinical presentation is heterogeneous &/or crosses various sub-specialities[6]
- best guidelines provide references to evidence-base
