Introduction
For all stages: FEV1/FVC < 70%
Staging
Stage 1: (mild COPD)
- mild airflow limitation
- FEV1 >= 80% predicted
- chronic cough & sputum production may be present
- patient/subject may not be aware of COPD
Stage 2: (moderate COPD)
- worsening airflow limitation
- FEV1 50-80% predicted
- shortness of breath on exertion
- patient/subject typically seeks medical attention at this stage due to chronic respiratory symptoms or exacerbation of disease
Stage 3: (severe COPD)
- further worsening airflow limitation
- FEV1 30-50% predicted
- greater dypnea
- reduced exercise tolerance
- recurrent exacerbations
Stage 4: (very severe COPD)
- severe airflow limitation
- FEV1 < 30% predicted or < 50% predicited + respiratory failure
- quality of life is impaired
- exacerbations may be life-threatening
