transient erythroblastopenia of childhood

Clinical manifestations

• gradual onset of pallor
• complete recovery without sequellae

Laboratory

• complete blood count (CBC)
  • normochromic normocytic anemia
  • blood hemoglobin generally 5-7 g/dL, but may be as low as 2 g/dL
  • clinically insignificant neutropenia
    • spontaneously resolves with onset of reticulocytosis
• peripheral blood smear
  • normal erythrocyte morphology
• reticulocyte count
• iron studies if MCV is low
• cytomegalovirus serology
• parvovirus serology

Management

• packed red blood cell transfusions for severe anemia
