Introduction
occurs when the tissue of the brain is cut or torn
Etiology
- penetrating & perforating head trauma
- often found with skull fractures on both sides of the head
Pathology
- the pia mater & arachnoid membranes* are torn over the site of injury
- common in the inferior frontal lobes & the poles of the temporal lobes
* in cerebral contusion the pia mater & arachnoid membranes are not torn
