Indications

• evaluation of chronic lead poisoning when lead levels are within normal limits

Clinical significance

• a high urine lead excretion post EDTA suggests elevated total body lead
• Chelation can then be used as therapy

Procedure

• administration of calcium disodium EDTA mobilizes lead deposited in tissues
• lead in urine is then measured
