Epidemiology

  • 1/4 of U.S. adults sit > 8 hours/day[5]
  • 3% of U.S. adults sit < 4 hours & exercise 150-300 minutes/week[5]
  • 2007 to 2016, total daily sitting time increased by about an hour for adolescents (reaching 8 hours) & adults (6 hours) [6[
  • leisure computer use of >= 1 hour per day increased for all age groups
    • prevalence among adults increased from 29% to 50% from 2003 to 2016[6]
  • > 50% of people watched >= 2 hours of television or videos daily[6]

Complications

Management

  • interrupting sedentary periods with activity every 30 minutes may mitigate mortality risk of sedentary lifestyle[4]
  • additional 15-30 minutes of physical activity per day[9]
